What is IPL Therapy?

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) therapy is a high-intensity light treatment that uses flashes of white light around the eye area to improve Dry Eye Disease caused by Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD), including cases where MGD occurs alongside Rosacea. The light is delivered using a handheld device applied to the skin.

What does IPL involve?

IPL therapy uses powerful white light flashes from a xenon flash lamp. Unlike laser light which uses a single wavelength, IPL employs the entire visible light spectrum, appearing white to the eye. Harmful frequencies such as ultraviolet (UV) light and infrared (IR) heat radiation are filtered out.

During treatment, the eye itself remains closed and is further protected with goggles or stickers. The doctor applies 4-5 light flashes to the skin around the eye, which can be mildly uncomfortable but is not generally painful.

Following IPL treatment, the eyelids are usually gently expressed by the doctor with the goal of removing any stagnant or hardened meibum from the meibomian glands.

How IPL Helps Dry Eyes

While researchers haven't completely figured out exactly how IPL improves Meibomian gland function, several theories exist:

  • IPL light may be absorbed by iron-pigment in red blood cells, warming the blood and stimulating gland activity
  • It may destroy abnormal blood vessels, reducing inflammation in blepharitis and rosacea
  • Other potential benefits include anti-bacterial effects, anti-inflammatory properties, and improved gland metabolism

Effectiveness

Studies since about 2015 have shown positive effects from IPL therapy for dry eye disease caused by MGD. Even cases resistant to conventional treatments have shown improvement. The exact mechanism that makes IPL effective remains unclear, but clinical results support its use. Professional medical IPL devices differ significantly from low-performance consumer devices. Professional treatment should only be performed by qualified doctors in a clinical setting. Typically, IPL treatment is used in conjunction with other at home treatments, such as heat therapy. This is to provide a holistic approach to the problem of Dry Eye.
